Hotel Review: Locanda della Posta

Locanda della Posta, Umbria, Italy: 8/10

A luxury townhouse on Perugia’s liveliest street with minimalist interiors and techie touches, popular with corporates and couples.

Location: 9/10

Ideally located on the city’s main thoroughfare of Corso Vanucci with its bars, restaurants, high street shops and lively evening passeggiata. Whether this is a good or bad thing is down to personal preference, but it’s certainly central.

Style/character: 7/10

This is a long-established hotel with an impressive list of former guests, including Goethe and Hans Christian Anderson. A very contemporary and minimalist renovation has slightly obscured its cultural heritage, but the hotel still feels ritzy with a swish white marble entrance hall and high-spec furnishings. There’s more character in the elegant breakfast room, where a magnificent restored ceiling fresco presides over one of the prettiest breakfast spots I’ve come across.

Service & facilities: 8/10

Staff are kind and helpful, forthcoming with restaurant recommendations and local area information. Beware that designated parking is some distance away (with an uphill walk to the hotel) but staff are more than happy to escort and graciously assist with bags.

Rooms: 8/10

Standard rooms are decorated in a slick, modern style with universal appeal. Linens are luxurious, and showers are fabulous in their enormous marble grandeur. The first floor suite (108) has the most character, sharing the breakfast room’s frescoed ceiling and old soul – it’s worth the extra spend, if available.

Food & drink: 8/10

The hotel has no restaurant, but there are lots of excellent dining options literally on the doorstep. The breakfast offering is healthy and extensive, notable for the veggies and juicer, and quality meats and cheeses unlike the usual pre-sliced stuff.

Value for money: 8/10

For its central location and luxurious feel, the locanda represents good value for money. Rack rate from €130 (£115) including breakfast. Free Wi-Fi.
